Winnie Chen is a Community Organizer for the Tenant Worker Center at Chinese Progressive Association (CPA). Prior to becoming staff at CPA, Winnie was a high school student when she joined CPA’s youth program Youth Movement of Justice Organizing (MOJO). She learned about community organizing and workers’ rights in her hometown of San Francisco, including in Chinatown where she spent most of her childhood. What convinced her to stay in community was when she was given the precious opportunity to meet and speak with social activist Grace Lee Boggs. This inspired her to pursue an undergraduate degree in Asian American Studies and continue her learning in grassroots community building as a 2015 Seeding Change Fellow with the Asian Pacific Environmental Network (APEN) to working as the Data Organizer for the San Francisco 2018 Our City, Our Homes Campaign. After having moved to the East Coast for a year to work with the Chinese American community in the Greater Boston Area at Chinese Progressive Association Boston, Winnie is thrilled to be back home (despite having started at the start of COVID-19 Shelter-in-Place) to serve her San Francisco community and does not ever plan to leave the City.
Winnie’s favorite (board) games include: Werewolf, Coup, and Catan, and you will most likely see her eating pupusas in the Mission or tacos in the Excelsior.
