Protecting our Communities against Authoritarianism – The Path Forward

This has been a heavy week. We are outraged and reeling from Trump’s authoritarianism in LA and here in the Bay, while looking out for our families, neighbors, and communities at home. Our hearts break for the garment workers, car wash workers, farm workers, and everyday people whose families are being torn apart. The MAGA regime’s use of excessive force, including National Guard troops and law enforcement, is an authoritarian violation of our rights intended to repress our dissent. At the same time, we are so deeply inspired and moved by the way people and communities have shown up and how our movement is exponentially growing in this inflection moment. We see the path forward.

We have been holding spaces to reflect with our members. One member shared that although she has felt scared, attending Know Your Rights trainings has provided some comfort and confidence. Other members have expressed how the raids are wrong, and feel concerned about increasing authoritarianism. In this reflection space, members also shared:

“Trump is creating chaos in our community so he can distract us from the terrible things he is doing, such as pushing for a budget that hurts working families.”

“Trump ignores everyday people’s voices and bypasses the governor’s power. This is not democracy.”

Leaning on each other and our communities is how we stay the course and remain vigilant as we encounter escalation from immigration enforcement. We have already seen the escalation from ICE happening in our backyards.

There is space for all of us to be in movement together, and these are just a few ideas:
