Grace’s Story: The Fight for Affordable Housing

Grace is working with other CPA members and families to advocate for housing that all San Franciscans can afford. She lives in a Single Room Occupancy (SRO) hotel with her parents and six-year-old daughter. In addition to organizing, she is a homecare worker studying early childhood education courses. She dreams of becoming a kindergarten teacher and giving her daughter a better life.

“Housing is not just a place to sleep, it represents safety, stability, privacy and dignity. A stable home allows me to work and study with peace of mind, and also allows my daughter to have a normal living and learning environment. She is now six years old and growing, and she needs a quiet, safe space.

Rent in San Francisco is too high. Many low-income families cannot afford a regular apartment, even if they work very hard. We need more affordable housing and long-term housing vouchers so that low-income families and children can have a stable, safe, and dignified life.”
