SRO Tenant Organizing

We believe that everyone deserves to live in safe and healthy living conditions. Our work aims to empower families to advocate for themselves through learning their housing rights, and navigating political structures to access critical resources.

Along with a multiracial, multilingual collaboration of five community-based organizations that make up the SRO Families United Collaborative, CPA organizes low-income immigrant tenants living in Single Room Occupancy (SRO) units in Chinatown to improve housing conditions.

This work grew out of our research through the Chinatown Justice Project in 2005, when CPA released the Substandard Housing Report documenting housing-related health threats from interviews with nearly 200 Chinatown SRO residents.

Today, our grassroots SRO Organizers work with families to conduct in-language outreach and organizing, address building issues, conduct building safety workshops, community activities, and support families to move into better living conditions through the Rental Subsidy Program and Section 8 Housing Vouchers.
