Chinese Progressive Association Statement on Passing of Mayor Ed Lee

Like many of you, this morning, we woke up to the news of Mayor Ed Lee’s sudden passing. We were deeply saddened to hear this news and send condolences to his family. We join the rest of Chinatown and San Francisco community in mourning this great loss.

As the child of immigrants, a civil rights and housing attorney, Mayor Lee made the community proud when he became the first Chinese American mayor of San Francisco. As an attorney at the Asian Law Caucus, Mayor Lee dedicated the early part of his career to make Chinatown a better and healthier place for its residents, particularly residents of the Ping Yuen housing projects. “We were proud to be with Ed and the work that he did to support the Ping Yuen tenants and to see the great work he did on behalf of the tenants. We will miss the energy, commitment, and compassion that he brought to the tenants,” reflects Pam Tau Lee, CPA Board Chair.

As Mayor, especially in these tumultuous times, Mayor Lee was a stalwart advocate for protecting San Francisco as a sanctuary city. We will always remember his leadership and partnership with community groups like CPA and labor organizations to win a $15 minimum wage for workers in San Francisco and to ensure this law was enforced.
